Never Too Late!
When I was in middle school, I read a book called Demon in My View. It was groundbreaking (to me, at least) and began a deep love of vampires that lasted the rest of my life (think Twilight before it was a thing). The author, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, had been eighteen when she published it. I was amazed, inspired, and thrust into the desire to finish my first novel by the time I was eighteen.
If she could do it, why couldn’t I?
A good question. But even after years and years of starting projects, experimenting with characters, and constantly getting distracted by the next shiny new idea, I never finished a book. I often felt frustrated and angry with myself for not taking advantage of my free time when I was younger and childless, but I kept the dream alive.
It wasn’t until I was thirty years old with two kids under the age of three, and a full-time job that I buckled down and finished a novel.
Accountability was really my primary motivator, something I had been lacking over the past almost two decades. My boss and I (a fellow author) would check in each Monday on how we did with our word count and lightly harass the other if we didn’t make it.
After a year and a half of hard work and forgoing showtime with my husband, I finished and published Name the Dark, a project I had on the back burner for years prior.
I cannot fully describe how it felt to finish and hold the book in my hands.
I guess what I’m getting at here is that if there is something you’ve always wanted to do, but you think you’ve missed your window of opportunity, you still have time! We’re not done here until we’re dead!
The Divine Draft by S. A. Rodgers
The gods don't have power, so they'll reclaim it...through you.
Waverly Mavros never asked to be chosen.
Drafted as a vessel for a goddess, she’s forced into the empire’s divine militia, where failure is fatal and power comes at a steep cost.
The training pushes her past her limits. The trials threaten her mind and body. And the General, cold, commanding, and utterly ruthless, might be her greatest threat of all.
She despises him. She also depends on him. Each day pulls them closer, and the fire between them becomes harder to ignore. Survival means more than completing the trials or surrendering to the goddess within. It means resisting a forbidden desire that could destroy them both.
Can she prove herself worthy of her goddess’s power, or will the edge of duty and desire be the one line she can’t survive crossing?
The Divine Draft is a slow-burn, romantic fantasy with hate-to-love, forbidden romance, and a dash of spice. Start reading the first installment of this defiant tale about holding on to who you are even when survival means becoming someone you never wanted to be.
Amazing Author Resource!!
Okay, if you follow me on Instagram, maybe you’ve already heard me talk about Novelio, but I’ll say it again: This app is a game changer for authors!!
Not only does it have a comprehensive and seriously organized character bible, but there is a section for in-depth world building. The questions are deep, thought-provoking, and give me examples of how the world could affect the story.
The plotting portion of the app is fairly new, but I’ve already used it to plot my entire upcoming novel, down to the scene structure. If you’re a writer, please give it a shot! This is honestly the app I’ve always dreamed of.
There’s a free 14-day trial, and if you fall in love with it (its inevitable) you can use the code AUTH20 for 20% off.
